      Greek Animal Welfare Fund
NGO name/title: Greek Animal Welfare Fund
Legal form: Non profit
Starting year of activity: 1959
Brief profile: Animal Action Hellas (former GAWF-Greek Animal Welfare Fund)
Animal Action (formerly known as GAWF), was founded in 1959 and is a not-for-profit company based in Athens and London. In Greece its registered number is 63793/505
Mission: Striving continually to improve the lives of animals in Greece
Animal Action Hellas operates as a national welfare organisation and undertakes the following actions:
• A nationwide neutering programme targeting stray cats and dogs through a mobile vet team. Our mobile teams focus principally on locations where there is no vet.
• Equine Project: the mobile Equine Team with its specialist professionals not only carries out outreach work that delivers a range of treatments but also teaches owners the techniques and basic knowledge they need to give their horses, donkeys, mules and ponies better care and longer lives.
• Educational programmes for children intended to create a future society which is more welfare conscious.
• Lobbying: We press for the implementation and improvement of the law as it affects animals. One of our successes has been the most recent tranche of welfare legislation passed by the Greek Parliament. Another is the achievement of a European “first” for Greece when the country became the only member of the EU to ban the use of any animal in a public entertainment or spectacle (such as a circus, a dolphinarium etc).
• Campaigning for better conditions for farm animals (laying hens, live animal transportation, cloning etc) in our capacity as the sole representative in Greece of Eurogroup for Animals
• Support smaller, local animal welfare groups across Greece creating a network of caring people enables us to extend our reach into even quite remote areas of the country.
We believe in working within Greece to find practical and sustainable solutions to animal welfare problems.
Our organisation receives no state subsidy and is dependent solely on the support of its donors, members and sponsors in Greece and the EU.
